How File Sender handles information. Last updated 5 October 2026.
File Sender carries files between people, either in a web browser or through the Windows application. We keep as little information about you as the service can be run on, we do not sell it, and we do not pass it to advertising networks.
Every visit leaves an entry in the web server log: the address you connected from, the time, the page requested, the response, the amount of data sent, and the browser identification your browser supplies.
From that address we work out an approximate location - city, region and country - using a copy of a geolocation database held on our own server. Your address is not sent to any outside service in order to do this. Detailed records are kept for 30 days and then removed; only counts and totals are kept after that.
This site sets no advertising or tracking cookies, and uses no third-party analytics service. The site software may set a single session cookie, which is needed for the site to function and is discarded when you close the browser.
In the browser, a file is encrypted on your own computer before it is uploaded. The key that would decrypt it is held in the part of the link that browsers keep locally and do not transmit, so this site does not hold the key to the files it carries, their file names or any message attached to them. That is a consequence of how the service is built and not a matter of policy.
A one-time transfer is deleted as soon as it has been collected, and in any case within 72 hours if it is never collected. A persistent transfer is kept until you remove it and does not expire. We record the time, the size and the approximate city of each upload and download so that the service can be monitored and reported on, but not the contents.
The Windows application does not upload files to this site. It sends them directly from your computer to the recipient’s computer. To find each other, the two computers use a public peer-to-peer network (a distributed hash table) run by other users and third parties, not by us. Computers in that network can see the public session key of a transfer being offered and the internet address of the computer offering it, and the other party to a transfer sees your address.
A copy used for personal use with no license key does not contact us. A copy used by an organization contacts our license server at billing.clue.im. When a license key is activated, refreshed, reactivated or deactivated, and about every 30 days while a key is active, it sends the product identifier, the license key, a machine fingerprint (a cryptographic hash of a Windows machine identifier), the computer name and the application version. While it is set to organizational use without an active key, it periodically sends the product identifier, the machine fingerprint, the application version, the usage type and the evaluation dates.
The license server records these requests together with the network address they come from, for license administration, fraud prevention and support. File names, file contents, invitation links, PINs and transfer records are not sent to it. Section 6 of the File Sender License Agreement describes the same.
Payment is taken by PayPal. We never see and never store your card details. To issue and support a license we keep the contact name, company, e-mail address, country and postal address given at purchase, any VAT or tax ID and purchase-order number you enter, the order and the invoice, the license key, and a record of each computer on which the key is activated: its machine identifier, computer name and application version, and when it first and last checked in. Licensing requests are logged together with the network address they come from. We keep these records for as long as they are needed to administer licenses, prevent misuse and meet our legal and accounting obligations.
You will be asked to confirm the address before anything is sent to it, and every message carries a link to stop. Addresses are never shown to other recipients and are never passed to anyone else.
We do not sell or rent information about you. We do not use advertising networks or third-party trackers. We do not attempt to identify individual visitors from their browsing.
You may ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Write to software@clue.im and we will respond.
If this notice changes, the date at the top changes with it.
Each one does a single job properly, in the same plain language, under the same license, with no accounts anywhere.
Reads the drive’s own file table instead of walking folders, so the whole disk appears quickly, sorted by size. Delete, move and rename from the same window, with a running total of the space reclaimed.
